Alya Sufiyah (Day 1 - 27 June 2018)

Experiencing

Publishing
We started of the day with breakfast and the opening ceremony. After listening to a few speeches and musical performances (a violin solo and a song called Blues), we listed to a panel of judges discuss about world hunger. The discussion was to stimulate our brain to get prepared for the design sprint on Zero Hunger.
During the Design Sprint, we were task to come out with a solution in groups of 4-5 in order to obtain Zero Hunger. Together with my groupmates we came up with an idea which was to install thin aluminium sheets on the houses of farmers in Africa to collect rainwater which is stored underground. This is done with hopes to reduce the occurrence of flash floods. The stored water can be used during drought seasons.
After the design sprint, during the evening, we had dinner, built-a-bear, and went to Target, Dollar Tree and Starbucks.
After settling down, we played spyfall with our newly made friends from NUS High. After that, we went through a round of practice presentation with Ms Mohan in the cafeteria. When we finished, we watched a movie outdoors on the grass patch. Valerie and the NUS High students left earlier before the movie ended. Matthew and I went back to our rooms after Avengers finished.

{What is the cause of the success or failure?}
For the design sprint, my group was not selected for the main presentation to all of the students from groups A and B. This may have been because we did not prepare our slides well enough. Our slides lacked statistics or pictures to make it convincing. I should have also brought my LD to the Design Sprint to keynote or sketchup our design to be more convincing. Despite this flaws, we still managed to get quite a number of votes as we were confident during our presentation.
We were able to go to Target as we were fast enough to sign up for a shuttle bus.

Generalising
{What have you learnt?}
Some statistic I learnt from listening to the talk is that...
  • 60% or the worlds hungry r women n children
  • 34 million children suffer from malnutrition
  • Droughts affect 39million ppl in 23 countries
Some keytakeaways from the talk include Improving accessibility, collaboration (holistic impact), working on poverty and education. With education, people will learn more on misconceptions that food pantry available in the US is only dry goods or canned goods. In reality, the food is filled with nutrition and the companies work with manufacturers and retail farm to support and give food.
Zero Hunger is important as food is a gateway to other needs. An example is if one has food insecurity, he may also be behind in paying the bills, buying medication for his illness or on-ing the heater. With Zero Hunger, people have one less issue to worry about in their lifestyle filled of trade offs.

Applying
{What would you do in the future?}
For future presentations/tasks, I would make sure to split up the time better so that we would have enough time to prepare our slides and presentation. I would also gather all the materials before hand (in this scenario bring my LD along for easier use).

In general, I hope to be able to brainstorm more creative and impactful ideas to be able to achieve Zero Hunger.
