Alya Sufiyah (Day 4 - 30 June 2018)

Experiencing

{What happened today?}
Today was the day where we watched many research presentations. I learnt the most today, not from lecturers or professors but from peers my age and those slightly older. After the research presentations, Ms Mohan brought us to the premier outlet to do a quick shopping spree for 30minutes. I managed to buy a shirt for my grandfather and a pair of shoes for myself from Adidas. When we came back, we got ready to head to watch a baseball game. The interval in between the games were more entertaining than the game itself - little kids played musical chairs and adults played limbo. I also managed to buy another shirt for my grandfather and a baseball since I did not manage to catch any flyball.

Processing
{What is the cause of the success or failure?}
It was a successful day of gathering knowledge as I penned down in my notebook.
I was unsuccessful in catching/getting any flyball as I felt 'paiseh' to act as a little kid to get the ball.

Generalising
{What have you learnt?}
For a successful presentation, I have to be confident with good intonation, eye-contact and body lannguage. To make a presentation more interesting, put a substantial amount of pictures/gifs and bringing a prototype/model.
From the presentations, some new knowledge I picked up:

(1) Water lettuce is known as a water purifier -> roots can absorb 'poison' in water like protein
(2) D-lipopeptide was observed to have better antimicrobial activity in S. aureus (a gram positive bacteria) than in E.coli (a gram negative bacteria)
(3) De-icers: Urea kills the most grass while Molasses killed the least
                     Calcium Chloride melted the most while Urea melted the least
In conclusion, inorganic de-icers are best to be used. Molasses are the best used in terms of environmental impact and speed of melting of ice.
(4) Liquefaction is a process that occurs after earthquakes where soil sinks and water rises (in lament terms, it would be the soil liquidifying, hence the name)

Applying
{What would you do in the future?}
In future, I would be more daring to clarify anything I am unsure of and come out with a more extensive project based on the new biotechnology skills i will be aquiring.
